Our Market, established in 2008 and owned by Red Lodge locals Steve and Kim Haman since 2016, is a neighborhood wine shop, cheese shop, and specialty food market known for Somm-selected wines, more than 70 cheeses, charcuterie, specialty foods, pantry ingredients, gifts, and personal recommendations.

Right next door, the Babcock & Miles Wine Bar & Café is a casual gathering place for coffee, breakfast, lunch, dinner, wine, bubbles, beer, cocktails, zero-proof drinks and plenty of reasons to stay awhile.

Walk next door, and the Babcock & Miles experience continues.

Our Wine Bar & Café is an easygoing Red Lodge gathering place where good food and good wine are meant to be enjoyed without making either unnecessarily complicated.

Start the day with coffee, espresso, and breakfast. Stop in for lunch. Meet friends for wine, cocktails, beer or something zero-proof. Settle in for dinner. Share a board. Order a flatbread. Try a Somm-selected glass you've never had before.

There's indoor seating, outdoor seating when Montana cooperates, and enough delectable food and drink to justify staying longer than you originally intended.

We consider that a feature.

Wine Is Where We Begin

If there's one thing Babcock & Miles has become especially known for over the years, it's wine.

Steve Haman—known around Red Lodge as “Somm Steve”—holds Level One certification from the Court of Master Sommeliers and has spent years developing relationships with producers, visiting wineries, studying regions and learning the people and stories behind the bottles.

That knowledge shapes what lands on our shelves, what gets poured next door, and how we help customers.

But you don't need to know anything about wine to shop here.

Actually, that's part of the fun.

Tell us what you already like.

Tell us what you're having for dinner.

Tell us what you don't like.

Tell us your budget.

Or tell us absolutely nothing except, “I need a bottle.”

We'll take it from there.

Because wine should be interesting.

Buying it shouldn't be intimidating.

Curated Has to Mean Something

We admit it: we love the word curated.

Around here, though, it has to earn its keep.

Babcock & Miles has long operated on a simple idea: if we're going to ask you to eat it, drink it, cook with it or give it to someone you like, we should have a reason for putting it in front of you.

So we taste.

We research.

We ask questions.

We learn about producers and places.

We look for quality, provenance, value, exceptional ingredients and products with something interesting to say.

Sometimes that leads us to a serious bottle from a celebrated winemaker.

Sometimes it leads to an absurdly good cheese.

And sometimes it results in the perfect Tuesday-night wine that doesn't require a special occasion or a complicated explanation.

Curated isn't a shelf aesthetic. It's doing the homework before you walk through the door.

Locally Owned. Actually Local.

Red Lodge isn't merely where Babcock & Miles does business.

It's home.

Steve and Kim Haman raised their family here and have owned Babcock & Miles since 2016. Kim has spent years contributing her time and experience to local efforts including workforce housing and emergency medical services. Members of the Babcock & Miles team remain active in organizations working to strengthen Red Lodge, including service on the Red Lodge Area Chamber of Commerce board.

You'll also see us at community events.

At meetings.

Around town.

At the grocery store.

On Broadway.

And occasionally at precisely the moment none of us expected to run into anyone we know.

That's small-town life.

And that's part of what being a neighborhood business means to us.

You don't simply open the doors here. You show up here.

We're grateful that Red Lodge has allowed us to do exactly that.

Get Your Babcock On

Food has always had a rather useful way of bringing people together.

So has wine.

Babcock & Miles exists somewhere in the middle of the two.

For nearly two decades, people have walked through our doors looking for a bottle, a wedge of cheese, an ingredient they couldn't find elsewhere, something good for dinner, a place to meet friends or simply a little advice.

We still get ridiculously excited about all of it.

Come browse the little yellow house.

Stay for a glass (or a bottle) next door.

Ask questions.

Try something new.

Take something delectable home.

That's what it means to Get Your Babcock On.

Steve Haman, Proprietor

Steve Haman, known locally as “Somm Steve” or “Chef Steve” has an incredible range of wine knowledge — the kind of person who can tell you not only the vintage, varietal, and subtle nuances of any particular wine, but also the name of the winemaker, their spouse and children, how many decades the family has been in the business, and in many cases, knows the wine maker or has been to the winery to experience what they do. An incredible resource that is commonly available, Steve holds a Level One Certification with the Court of Master Sommeliers, recognized as the world’s premier wine education program.

Kim Haman, Proprietor

Kim Haman is the co-proprietor of Babcock & Miles. Overseeing purchasing, events, sales, and marketing, Kim has a keen eye for the unique and is a lover of bubbles and cheese. You will often find her at the Front of House helping customers at the Babcock & Miles Market or next door at the Babcock & Miles Wine Bar & Café, but she’s frequently behind the scenes making sure everyone is taken care of or recording an episode of Coffee Talk With Katye & Kim.

Both Babcock & Miles locations are staffed, managed, and cared for by an exceptional team of food, wine, and beer-loving friends and family. Nothing we do would be possible without our crew. Does this sound like your kind of place? We’re always looking for talented individuals to join Babcock & Miles. Interested in joining our Red Lodge, MT-based team?
